What's eating the USA

With the US divided along lines of Left and Right, there seems to be a similar dividing line which can be drawn along lines of consumerism and SUV ownership accompanied by a conservative mindset on one side and envrionmentalism and energy reform accompanied by a liberal (in the American context) mindset, on the other side. If Americans are themselves getting wider in concert with their chosen mode of transport then it's not a recent phenomenon. Nontheless a conservative outlook defines the desire to maintain this statu quo. Perhaps a change in government will lead to a similar switch in lifestyle. If McDonalds can add salads to their menu, can Americans add environmentalism to theirs?
