The Rocks – $35,000 art prize
Extracted from the Media Release :
A purse of $35,000 is being offered for the second year by Art on The Rocks, one of Sydney’s newest and most prestigious art competitions.
Incorporating a first prize of $20,000, Art on The Rocks turned heads last year and not just those in the art world. In its inaugural year the unique, outdoor, weekend of public painting in The Rocks, attracted more than 80,000 visitors who came to view 47 new and established artists at work.
A more lucrative award than many of Sydney’s big-name traditional art prizes, Art on The Rocks will once again call for submissions from Monday 8 March to Wednesday 14 April.
Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority is inviting Australia’s most talented new and established artists to apply for pre-selection and the opportunity to publicly paint, draw or sketch in some of the most inspiring pockets of Sydney’s heritage quarter.
In addition to the first prize worth $20,000, a Young Artist Award prize of $10,000 and The Art On The Rocks People’s Choice Award prize worth $5,000, are up for grabs.
Initiated last year by Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and Sculpture by the Sea founder David Handley, Art on The Rocks encourages artists to paint, draw or sketch on any medium, in any genre, with The Rocks precinct as their muse.
"Following the popular success of the inaugural Art on the Rocks last year we are once again calling for talented artists to participate in a weekend of public painting in The Rocks.
"Excitingly, the project features the acquisitive $20,000 Art on the Rocks Prize for painting, drawing or sketching, with the award-winning work selected from a public sale exhibition,” said Mr Handley.
Scheduled for 29 and 30 May, the weekend of public painting will transform The Rocks into an outdoor studio with artists splashing their paints and pressing their leads against a backdrop of live entertainment including jazz artists and classical musicians.
For its inaugural year Art on The Rocks received more than 300 applications with 47 artists selected for participation. This year, a newly appointed distinguished panel of judges will pre-select up to 60 artists for the outdoor workshop.
As part of the pre-selection process, artists are required to submit samples of up to four previous works in either slide, colour photo or printed image format. A $400 account at Parkers – Sydney Fine Art Supplies will assist each selected artist with their art supply needs.
Judging for the three major prizes will take place mid-June with winners announced at the opening of the official Art on The Rocks Exhibition on Thursday 17 June at the ASN Gallery. The public exhibition of artworks will remain on display until Sunday 4 July.
Applications for submissions are available at www.therocks.com or by contacting Jo Ferris, Artist Coordinator, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, (02) 9240 8874.
