Nintendo demoed Switch 2 to developers at Gamescom

In Cologne last month, Nintendo's public Gamescom showfloor booth let you play Pikmin 4 and Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. But behind the scenes, the company had more up its sleeves.

As per VGC : Another VGC source claimed that Nintendo showcased Epic’s impressive The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo – originally released to showcase the power of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021 – running on target specs for its next console.

The demo is said to have been running using Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology, with advanced ray tracing enabled and visuals comparable to Sony‘s and Microsoft’s current-gen consoles

If the next Nintendo system can run Matrix Awakens @ 1080p even with DLSS performance mode @ 30fps ... that's still insane ...
Coz, Imagine what the already remarkable Nintendo first party can achieve even more ...
If Nvidia manages to supply even a decent future-proof SoC and continues to support software wise with DLSS 3.5+ & beyond .... man ... good things await ... lets wait n watch

Nintendo will release a severely underpowered gaming system that will seem too expensive for what the hardware offers. Nes fanatics say they don't care about hardware power but only care if nintendo offers it which they would love it. Soon people will be saying the new Nintendo console will be running crysis at 4k 120fps.

There are handheld devices out now that are way more powerful than what the successor to the nes-switch will be. The "switch 2" won't be as expensive as a lot of handheld gaming systems available but I believe it'll be priced similarly to a steam deck or a little cheaper.

Jin_Sakai5d ago

I don’t expect a super powerful console. I leave that up to Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo however push every little ounce out of weak hardware and make some amazing games.

RaidenBlack5d ago

@Jin_Sakai
Nobody's expecting a "super powerful console" ... as I stated: DLSS'd 1080p @ 30.
Just saying, that Nvidia's SoC and DLSS have come a long way, and a modern Nvidia solution (even in handheld format) will offer Nintendo first party devs, helluva lot perf uplift compared to the current Switch.

Eonjay5d ago

Few things wrong with this. First, the Matrix Awakens 'runs' on a Series S so a PS5 or Series X power isn't required. Full stop. Even if the use the Series S as the Switch 2 spec we run into another issue:

The Series S uses about 75 W when gaming. The Steam Deck runs about 15 W (while also being able to run the Matrix Awakens). The Steam Deck while amazing for a handheld goes for the same price as a digital PS5 BUT is less powerful than a PS4.

And while the the Switch 2 can have a dock that brings it up to Series S, using DLSS to smooth out the rough edges, it does feel very Anti-Nintendo to be using current tech that would be required to get PS5 levels of graphics out of their new system.

People were complaining about Sony not building a portable PS5 and I promise you Nintendo, won't be building one either. I don't think even Nintendo can ship a $600 console and I know Nintendo always aims to make a profit off their hardware. So the Switch 2 will only be as powerful as they can make it without losing sales or profit.

Zuex5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

except all those systems you listed are based on power hungry x86 architecture whereas the Switch will most likely continue to use ARM, 1080p30 with DLSS3 while docked doesn’t seem far fetched to me

Edit: I’d expect between ps4 and ps4 pro performance from the GPU, the CPU will be a bit underpowered depending on which cores they use & the transistor density they go with. Prob Samsung 7nm so can expect flagship 2019 phone performance on the cpu

fr0sty5d ago

I don't expect it to best PS5, but if it can at least run everything PS5 can, and maybe outperform Series S along the way, I'd gladly drop some $ on it to get some of those great Nintendo games.

Jin_Sakai5d ago

“Nobody's expecting a "super powerful console"

Half the comments I read across the internet think Switch 2 should be way more powerful than it’s going to be. It’s a handheld after all.

Scarpa1234d ago (Edited 4d ago )

@_SilverHawk_
Even if it's severly underpowered, their games will outperform and outsell every boring PS5 exclusive.

The trouble is that unreal 5 games are already struggling a bit on the main consoles never mind what it will run like on a new Switch. If I was buying the new Switch it's mainly for the first party titles and not so much third party.

RaidenBlack5d ago

Made my comment, assuming the Matrix UE5 demo rumor is true.
(That is possible ... let's say, Nvidia offers something like a customized version of something like their Orin Nano or something better(?) for Switch 2 ... i.e Samsung 8nm, 6x Cortex-A78, 1024 Ampere cores, 8 GB RAM ... as well as DLSS 2/3+ support. It can run, fairly modern games with help of DLSS)
But as I said above and echoing what you said ... Nintendo's first party games would be really interesting.
The DLSS 2+ here will do all the heavy lifting going forward and this will enable the Nintendo devs a huge uplift in available computing power (on top of the silicon upgrade) to harness and put to use.
And will also help 3rd party devs in porting their games to the platform.

Nintendo will never sell its hardware at loss. Atleast not a successful one. If they come out with a new one in 2024 I doubt their next console with have same specs as PS5/XSX

1080P/60FPS
1440P/60FPS

Would be happy with either

EvertonFC5d ago

Interesting ☺️
Nintendo lost me with the Wii but I like those specs 👍

I doubt it but I really hope they let us choose between a standard portable version or a home docked one but with more storage.

I never take mine out the house, and in my city anyway, travelling a lot for work I never see anyone on the bus / metro playing them.

FinalFantasyFanatic5d ago

I saw someone with one in the lunch room at work once, then again, my area is slowly become a low socio-economic area (aka, a centerlink dumping ground). So maybe people aren't so keen to take them along outside their homes, I wouldn't risk it.

If I was a kid, I'd take it on a car trip while my parent's drove (back when I enjoyed Pokemon Yellow on the Gameboy), but these days, I'm the one doing all the driving by myself. I don't think I'll ever have a good opportunity to leave the house with it and actually enjoy the device.

-Foxtrot5d ago

I mean I’m just talking about my city’s and surroundings so I’m guessing other places would be different but usually everyone is on their phones. I’ve even seen the odd person still will their 3DS and the like.

I think it’s just such a fragile, expensive item that in some places people are less likely to take them with them anywhere unless on holidays or long trips in the comfort of a car. It’s not as easy to hide or quickly put in your pocket aswell like their other handheld consoles.

It’s not like if something happened to your Gameboy you’d be like “shit, well I’ll go home boot up my GameCube and play some Luigi’s Mansion” because this thing is your main console.

If they gave people a choice and let people just stick with a docked version I’d love it, especially if they gave us an updated Gamecube styled controller over the Joy cons

FinalFantasyFanatic4d ago

I would have loved it if Nintendo had made a Pro version that was dock only, especially if it had more power than the other version, maybe they'll do that with the Switch 2 (probably not though, since the hybrid system is such a winner for them). Personally I don't mind the Joycons, but I never got the dreaded stick drift either.

Sgt_Slaughter5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Have a dock that can be upgraded with an M.2 SSD would be a great choice, as well as the ability to overclock for better docked performance.

jznrpg5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I don’t mind the hybrid if it was powerful enough but not sure it will be. I’d like for a dock that adds computing power to the machine and still be able to be handheld with lesser power . I doubt they do that because it would cost more but that would be cool.

-Foxtrot5d ago

I think it would be nice to give developers the choice

You can make your game docked only with extra features OR keep it the same

CDbiggen5d ago

Ooo would love a trailer soon with a release in March again, but other rumours put the release at later next year. Either way, it's about time.

Number1TailzFan5d ago

It's overdue. My issue is gonna be if they recycle the same tired stuff. There's quite a few dormant titles they need to bring back, if it's the same Mario Kart with no DKR style single player then it's a no buy from me. There's only so many times you can keep recycling the same game and only upgrade the graphics and that's it.

-Foxtrot5d ago

I can’t believe they haven’t done a DKR or even Crash Team Racing single player with a hub along with little challenges to do in each race (CTR Tokens / Coloured Gems / Time Relics etc)

Having the exact same structure again is going to get tiresome.

CDbiggen5d ago

They really phoned it in with the switch library. No big risks, nothing interesting or quirky. Very by the numbers main franchise entries.
That and ports. Lots of ports.
As a long time Nintendo fan, I much preferred the DS, Wii, Wii U, 3DS libraries. Hopefully this sales success will prompt some new and interesting ips and games again, Mario Wonder looks like a step in the right direction.

Old McGroin5d ago

I'm going for reveal in March, release for Christmas 2024. They will let Mario Wonder have its time in the sun first, probably.

persona4chie5d ago

I love how people disagree with what YOU plan on doing lol

Muigi5d ago

As long as it’s BC idc we have PS5/Xbox/PC for top of the line graphics.

phoenixwing5d ago

I'm of the same opinion. I want my library to come with me.
