It's not about a single man by the way. I have principles that I stand by and I will not support douche tactics. Take2 lost me as a customer, EPS lost me as a customer, and Pitchford is an all around douchebag .
Support whomever you want, but I have standards and I will not bend to bullshit in this industry.
That's for sure. He helped make a successful franchise, but he thinks because of that his the best, when really most of gearbox games have flopped harder than Waterworld.
You forgot "snake-oil salesman" in your description. This guy would peddle a dead cat to a 5-year old if it meant he could make a buck... "Hey kid, I've got a beautiful Tabby cat here and it's still got 7 lives left! Ignore the guts hanging out of its mouth, it's just actin' cute and playin' dead! Even better - you can spray paint it any color you like! I'm telling you, kid, the options are endless!!"
This guy diverting funding from Sega/Fox for Alien: Colonial Marines to Borderlands 2 and then basically laughing in everyone's face about it when called out is why Gearbox will never get a dime from me while he is still a shareholder, let alone CEO. It's a shame too because they did such great work porting Halo CE to PC.
In certain cases the few can cause a ripple effect. Like a throwing a rock into the ocean, if enough rocks get tossed in there the results can be devastating.
Great would be stretching it. They're an average studio at best with some very questionable present and past business practices. Pitchford being a detached megalomaniac hasn't done them any favors now or then.
@hercules_ Why would anyone even care what Randy cares about now? Borderlands 3 could get 10s and he'd still be rightfully despised. The man is human garbage. Nothing gonna change that.
I'd say they're better than average. The Borderlands games they did have been great. Brothers in Arms games were pretty good for their time. Battleborn I heard was decent, but just got completely overshadowed. Duke Nukem I heard sucks, but I think he did bought the rights and finished it off due to his connection with the series. And Aliens is Aliens.
Battleborn was a trash Overwatch clone. Duke Nukem in the typical Gearbox half-ass fashion was finished quickly when they got the rights rather than revamping an obviously terrible game that should have never released anyway. Aliens Colonial Marines was a colossal lie in both advertising and straight from the horse's mouth, i.e Randy, that in principle should have gotten them more disdain and shunning from the industry than they received. Borderlands is their one trick and Brother in Arms faded into mediocrity every following title.
I couldn't care less what the guy says or does. I rate and buy games solely on their merit.
I ignore publisher X is bad, industry person Y is an idiot, and Z console sux.
I buy all the consoles so I can play whatever game I want, and I buy the best games regardless of who makes them. Because to me the most important aspects are the games, the networks, and the operating system/firmwares in that order.
Yup. But, some folks like folks that maybe should not be liked and some folks don't like folks that maybe should be liked.
There are very few CEOs that don't have a lot of skeletons in their closet and that if you knew more about them, they would probably not be liked at all. Liking or not liking people is a perception and perception can often be misguided and wrong. I have met some people that say the worst things but when you sit down and meet them at home they are the best class of people you can find anywhere. Then, there are others that seem fine but when you get to know them you find out they are pure pricks.
Ok, so let's go ahead and take this to the logical extreme to see how that philosophy holds up. If you found out someone was a murderer or pedophile or something equally bad would you still line their pockets with your hard earned money just because they make fun games? The vast majority of people would not because that signals to the industry that there is no cost/benefit to being a good or bad human being. This applies in so many ways, if we buy games from companies that force people to work 80-100 hour workweeks to meet impossible deadlines we as consumers signal that such practices are acceptable. The same thing applies with predatory monetization schemes. There are far too many good games that come out on a regular basis for anyone to keep up with anyway. So why not encourage good behavior from those who run the show by basing our wallet-votes on more than whether a game might be fun or not?
I am talking about generic personalities and behaviours. You are talking about criminal actions. I will not knowing support criminal actions.
As for sweat shops and predatory monetization schemes. There are literally millions of products both in and outside the games industry that are built on free overtime and predatory monetization. If you stop buying them all you probably will save a ton of money but not own anything. I am not trying to justify it. I think it is wrong. But, until every country comes together and agrees to common standards of living for all people, a single world wide currency, the replacement of money as a person/business's worth, and common work standards that everyone adheres to the world won't change. (No I am not a socialist, but, people are taken advantage of every day while many of us [including me] live in our first world nations and have personal lives and disposable incomes buying things like video games, there are billions that stay alive day by day trying to make ends meet and in many cases just survive).
Here's the harsh truth Mr. Urnalist...no matter how much you hate him, there would be no borderlands without him and without borderlands, gearbox wouldn't exist today and probably would be bought out by EA.
Thanks for the Commander Lilith spoilers - that was a total jerk move. Dlc is two months old and you just gave away the ending. I'm sure there are plenty of others who were planning on doing it closer to BL3 launch
He's the owner and CEO. He can do whatever the hell he wants with his property.
Reminder he did this stunt at Pax over a few twitter comments

His Ego is bigger then EvaXephon, Phil Fish, and Cliffy B
This guy is a buffoon - foot in mouth, huge narcissist,
just a cringey bloke all round.
Handy Pitchfork
