i kinda disagree, the gameplay was never amazing (although it was over the top so i kinda agree), it was decent, but the over-the-top gangsters with their fun personalities and appearance is what made the game special. This version could have better gameplay than the previous but still not be as fun or entertaining. which i think is the worry fans have with the direction this has gone.
It was also fun that the devs didn't care about offending any particular group and just focused on fun first.
I have a feeling this will be a financial disaster for them.
Should have been a new IP or at least a spin off imo. "Saints Row" is Saints Row because of the characters and stories etc as we know them, I just get BF Hardline vibes from this. If it was marketed the right way and just allowed to be judged as a game in its own right it wouldn't get half the criticism it's getting.
Making drastic changes to settings/characters and giving it a recognisable brand name that carries certain expectations is a difficult task no matter the franchise.
Maybe I should've been clearer. Changes that go against the grain of the brand it's putting on the box are hard to pull off.
To use my previous comparison, going from military to cops and robbers in BF Hardline cut against the grain, just like the new cast of the Saints Row reboot are people the original Saints would have bullied out of town in the opening mission. Both of which might have faired much better flying under their own banners.
Change for changes sake which isn't consistent with the brand they are trying to sell it under is the reason it's getting a hard time is my point.
We're discussing a series where you went from starting a gang to becoming the president, to entering a matrix style simulation while fighting aliens and a series where the devil has a disney princess style musical segment.
People complaining because the hipsters are starting a gang have literally no ground to stand on here.
Saints Row gameplay made the game "good" imo. It didn't do any one thing exceptionally well, but had a lot of gameplay elements that were strong enough to make them an enjoyable package.
That said, I must be mis-remembering the original games because I dont recall ANY of the characters or humor involved being terribly memorable. Seems like the author is just overly adverse to change here honestly.
you will have customizable character creator, but get ready for a more toned down version. I would not preorder this game, see what its like and what people are saying (not ign, kotaku, gamespot or polygon), before buying for sure.
I see your point and I don't pre-order games anyway but the developers are saying this would be the most customizable options they have ever given in a saints row game
One aspect is the same ergo the entire game is the same. That doesn't work unfortunately, you can't customise the story or the characters around you so it's definitely not the same.
What kind of frustrating is most people wanted a mixture of saints row 2 and saints row 3 and they would have been happy but it seems like the developers went in a totally different direction
And the developers are also trying to sell a game. Removing things that make or break the system and adding other things in their minds would give the same statement.
@gamezenith they are censoring everything so far like fbs Jim robs etc…. Just wait…. I guarantee the sex appeal slider is gone or renamed and some of the emotes done away with.
They would've been better off using this presentation as a stand in for the real thing. Like have these unrelatable internet personas get killed in a drive by the real protags. While one of them goes, "Tchh come on, nobody wants to get robbed by Steve Urkel." But alas they just did a "How do you do fellow millennials" instead.
The trailer rubbed me the wrong way but the gameplay looks like the Saints Row I know and love. Looking forward to it. Got the notorious edition pre ordered
Oh, come on. It's nowhere near as gritty and "I don't give two shits" as these games have always been. It's turning into a kid friendly, made for Nickelodeon Mc Donald's birthday party
The characters in Saints Row were never likable but the over the top gameplay made up for it.
Eh, i'm excited for it, no drama here.

Im looking forward to seeing the end product
Remember when Volition made one of the best Marvel Video Games ever at the time it was released? (The Punisher on PS2, Xbox) ?
