Because it's proprietary... yes, we know. This isn't news.

Basically. They’re not investing large amounts of resources into an overpriced product that has around 20 million users, that can’t easily be used with the hundreds of millions of other devices that can use SSDs.

Their focus is on traditional NVMe drives.

The S is their main console.

Actually it is MS main Console as Digitial Foundry has said they were told by Phil Spencer that the S is the main console and the Series X is the mid gen refresh. It will be interesting when Sony release their PS5 Pro that MS might release a 2nd mid gen refresh console so that Devs will have to design games for the Series S, X and X pro.

I somehow feel this writer is confusing internal with external as well as what is and is not proprietary. These storage cards are external, and use CFExpress as the interface. None of which are proprietary. Obviously the main issue is really more about the size (2230) and how in that small of a form factor it becomes harder to make larger capacity chips. On a 2280 format, there is more room for more storage chips.

The "internal" drive of both the X/S is also 2230. So same rules apply to them making higher capacity units down the road.

The issue is more on the licensing part. We have a Chinese clone that uses a 2280 NVme as the base from Reletech. It does look a bit weird popping out from the back of the console, but they apparently work very well.
